Martin Gore Hints At New Depeche Mode Album

In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, Martin Gore talks about reuniting with Vince Clarke for the VCMG project and at the end of the interview dropped big hints at a new Depeche Mode album:

What else have you been working on recently? Is there a new Depeche Mode album in the works?
We finished this project last May or something. Since then I’ve been working on writing songs for Depeche. And we are about to embark on a whole new project. We’re starting in the studio at the end of March, hoping to have an album finished by the end of the year, and then probably getting to the whole touring process in 2013.

I think it’s too early, really, to talk about [the record], because everybody is quite happy with the actual sound of the demos, which is quite reassuring and a bit of a novelty. We feel like we’ve got a head start on this album before we even got to the studio. It probably won’t be out until spring next year.”

Martin Reunites With Vince After 30 years

After 30 years working on their respective ongoing music projects, Vince Clarke (Erasure / Yazoo / Depeche Mode) and Martin L. Gore (Depeche Mode) come together for the first time since 1981 as VCMG (their combined initials) to release a brand new album preceded by a series of EPs.

VCMG is the fruit of initially tentative discussion and subsequent enthused collaboration where Vince and Martin, both influential as pioneers in electronic music, get to exercise their lifelong love of the genre as the techno inspired VCMG.

As Vince explains: ““I’ve been getting into and listening to a lot of Minimal, Techno & House music and I got really intrigued by all the sounds… I realised I needed a collaborator… so it occurred to me to talk to Martin.”

Gore said in a press release, “Out of the blue I got an e-mail from Vince just saying, ‘I’m interested in making a techno album. Are you interested in collaborating?’ This was maybe a year ago. He said, ‘No pressure, no deadlines,’ so I said, ‘OK,’ and that’s what we’ve been doing the last six month.”

The writing and recording of the album was done in a typically unique way with the pair working alone in their respective studios, communicating only via email, exchanging files until the album was ready. It was in May 2011 that the pair met for the first time to discuss the project when they both performed at Short Circuit presents Mute festival in London.

The album (title to be announced soon) which has already been recorded was produced by Vince Clarke and Martin L. Gore and mixed by the influential Californian electronic artist Überzone / Q and will be released in the spring of 2012.

The first release is an EP entitled Spock. EP1 / SPOCK will feature remixes from Edit-Select, aka Tony Scott, the UK DJ / producer and founder of EditSelect Records whose previous remix credits include Speedy J, Death In Vegas and Gary Beck; Regis, British techno musician Karl O’Connor, member of the Sandwell District collective and co-founder of Downwards Records); DVS1, Brooklyn based producer Derek VanScoten (Radiohead / Sleigh Bells / Emancipator); plus XOQ, the alter ego of Überzone / Q, who mixed the VCMG album.

EP1 / SPOCK will be available initially as a global exclusive on Beatport on 30 November, and then on all DSPs from 12 December with the 12″ release following on 19 December 2011.

Susan Boyle Covers Depeche Mode’s “Enjoy The Silence”

Susan Boyle has decided to cover Depeche Mode’s classic “Enjoy The Silence” which will feature in her forthcoming third album “Someone to Watch Over Me” (out November 1st 2011). “The melody of the song is just beautiful,” Boyle tells Rolling Stone, “but really that lyric sounds like it will touch so many people in the way it touched me.” Boyle’s version sounds like it has been slowed down with the gender changed (“my little boy”) 🙂

Depeche Mode Covers U2

Depeche Mode will contribute a cover of U2’s “So Cruel” to an upcoming Achtung Baby tribute album in connection with the 20th anniversary reissue of Achtung Baby (the album turns 20 in November 2011). This was confirmed by the U2’s frontman, Bono, himself during a press conference at the Toronto International Film Festival. The cover was recorded in Santa Barbara and New York.

The English trio Depeche Mode forged synth-pop in the 1980s, then scored massive hits in the 1990s with songs like “Personal Jesus” and “Enjoy the Silence.” Now, the group has enlisted a crew of wiz to rework its back catalog the collection “Remixes 2: 81-11.” Frontman Dave Gahan joins us to talk about the album, the band and his career. Check out the video below of the interview.

Depeche Mode – Remixes 2: 81-11 3CD

On 6 June 2011, Depeche Mode will release Remixes 2: 81-11 on Mute. An inspiring collection of new and classic mixes of material covering their entire career, the album includes remixes of tracks from their 1981 debut Speak And Spell, through to 2009’s Sounds Of The Universe, and is the follow-up to 2004’s million-plus selling Remixes 81-04. These remixes reinforce Depeche Mode’s standing as one of the world’s most influential and innovative acts.

Depeche Mode have been at the forefront of remix culture for the best part of three decades and this new compilation includes classic mixes from M83, UNKLE, Trentemøller, François Kervorkian and Dan The Automator, alongside all-new mixes from Stargate, Eric Prydz, Karlsson & Winnberg (from Miike Snow) and Röyksopp. In addition to this, the expanded editions include exclusive remixes by former band members Vince Clarke and Alan Wilder – the first time either artist has remixed tracks for their former colleagues.

Remixes 2: 81-11 will be available in two different CD formats – Single and Triple Disc versions, as well as digital download.

Highlights from the selection of classic mixes include reworkings of “Dream On” from 2001’s Exciter, “Suffer Well,” “John the Revelator” and “A Pain That I’m Used To” from 2006’s Playing The Angel and “In Chains,” “Peace” and “Wrong” from 2009’s Sounds Of The Universe, while the new mixes include “Tora! Tora! Tora!” and “Puppets” from 1981’s Speak And Spell, “Never Let Me Down Again” and “Behind The Wheel” from Music For The Masses as well as “A Question Of Time” from 1986’s Black Celebration.
